Here's what you need to even afford getting addicted to video games:
- a place where you can stay for free
- all basic necessities (water, electricity, heating) and food paid for (because an addict will not go to work)
- living with someone who doesn't kick you out or disown you for being a complete waste of space
- a computer or a video game console
- access to the games (which in this time and age means access to the Internet)
- being able to live like this for months if not years

Is this the "shitty hand" in life you speak of? I'm having a hard time believing it because I can think about dozens of examples of people who would gladly swap their problems to video game addiction.
